I like copying papers and shredding them

I feel a pattern that the beginning of semesters are going to be a bit rough for me. I’m a worry-wart, so all of these new classes and schedules and obligations tends to send my mind spinning and I just simply freak out. However, now that week one is behind me, I’m feeling less apprehensive about this semester and at least trying to take it one day at a time.

At least I’m not crying over how much I miss home like last semester. (Though I miss my dog, Tabor, terribly. :()

I started my new job on Wednesday. I’m not really sure what my official title is – I think it’s along the lines of Clerical Student Assistant. I have work-study with my university and work in the Psychology Department. From what I got from my first day of training, I basically do whatever they want me to do. I received a thick handbook about what my job would entail. After the first day, I honestly couldn’t tell you what I was supposed to do. I didn’t know, which was slightly scary and at the same time funny. The whole being in a new environment and not knowing what the crap is going on or who any of these people are really freaks me out. So after I was done with work on Wednesday, I just worried all day Thursday about how work on Friday would go. :/

Like always though, I seem to worry about really irrelevant things. It turns out, I actually had fun this morning at work. I got to scan a lot of papers, shred them, and today I placed an order for supplies. I got to go through and find the items on the website, so I was just pretending I was buying all these office supplies for myself because I like shopping for new school supplies. :P Then I did more “actual work” and worked on some Excel spreadsheets, but it was just overall a good day. Plus, I get my own email, which may seem insignificant, but it definitely makes me feel like an integral part of the office. :)

My supervisor seems very nice. She’s an older lady, and she’s very sweet, if not rather particular about how things are done. I’m not going to lie, I’ve always wanted to work in an office, even if I was just doing bottom-of-the-totem-pole kind of work. I always thought working with a copy machine and running errands would be fun. :P Is that weird? I think I’ll like working in an office-type environment.

At least I hope so. I would prefer not to hate my job.

I originally had some problems with my hours and this stupid Theatre Appreciation class I have to take. Basically the course was overlapping with the hours I was supposed to work. I thought it would’ve worked out fine, I just would’ve been a few minutes late to class on Fridays. I emailed the instructor to notify him and he responded rather douche-ly. I don’t think he intended to reply so rudely, but it definitely came across since he lectured me about how I shouldn’t enroll in classes I can’t attend on time. Well, pardon me. I didn’t assign myself the hours I’m working! Then he told me I would probably fail the class if I was up to five minutes late on Fridays, which I think is a little dramatic (heh, he is a theatre instructor…). But anyhow, I just had to shorten my hours some, which I suppose is okay, but it took an hour off of how much I originally worked, and while I might think I like doing this office stuff, I’m still there for the money.

Which, by the way, my pay is awesome, at least for the kind of job I have. I make $10.50 an hour, which is such a relief since I am a.) a college student and b.) kind of broke. I’ve been saving for a car, and next semester I’m moving into an apartment. I can just see the bills stacking up before my eyes. x_x I have a fixed schedule which is also nice: I work Mondays and Wednesdays from 12:15 PM to 5:00 PM and then Fridays 8:00 AM to 10:45 AM. The Fridays kind of suck because I have to get up pretty early and it’s a short shift (stupid theatre class), and the Mondays and Wednesdays because I don’t have time for lunch between my class and work. I’ll just have to pack a sandwich to go, which I’m sure I’ll get sick of pretty fast.

At the end of my shift this morning, my ankle was really hurting so I assumed I had a blister from my flats. I got to my class and Andrew was complaining about something, so I pulled up my pants to show him my blister and was startled to find my ankle covered in blood. My flats were literally just slowly chipping at the layers of my skin. It was disgusting. I had to sit through class with it bleeding and walk across campus back to my dorm before I could clean it and take my shoes off. I’d post a picture, but I think if I stared at it too long I’d get queasy…

It hurt pretty bad once I started paying attention to it. I soaked my pants and tried to get as much blood of my shoes as I could when I got back. I’m not too worried since it’s just on the inside of the flats so it’s not noticeable. However, now I have to find some different shoes that don’t destroy my feet!

  1. I’m just like you – at the beginning of the semester for classes I worry like crazy (especially since I was on a waitlist this time!). I suppose it’ll start getting better later when the professor stops worrying about waitlisted students too!

Yay for office jobs! I know, most people probably thing we’re crazy but I love office jobs too. The environment is always nice, and despite the stereotype, everyone at my job seems to love it. Plus it’s so fun and structured :P

Aw, I hate that about teachers… they always think their class is the one and only class you /must/ attend or your life is over… or something like that. But true, he could just be a bit over dramatic.

Eep, thanks for not posting the picture! :P Scars/cuts/blood make me queasy, haha. I hate that about flats, though… I had a couple pairs that did that to me. :/ Huge waste of money and I was kind of sad because they were really cute too. There needs to be some more decent quality flats on sale around here.

  2. Aw, I hate when ballet flats do that. Like I’ll be wearing a new pair and by the time I get home they’ll be blisters on the back of my feet T_T they suck. But I’m glad to hear you’re liking your new job! I still have yet to find one haha. Best of luck to you with your new semester as well, hopefully your drama teacher gets a little better :)

And thank you for the comment on my site! I have one more exam to do so I’m pretty happy. And I completely agree with you when you said you wish you could just sit and learn but not have to do any work for it. If only school were like that, too bad it isn’t :(

  3. Oh my god. The worse my flats do is dig into my skin but this is horrifying. I hope you’re doing better, but yeah, I’m glad you got a job and everything is going better for you.

Though that instructor did sound mean by far. :/

  4. I hate it when flats do that. Are those new? I guess it’s always like that when it’s still new and you still haven’t gotten used to that. It’s good that you’re liking your new job. Good luck with school stuff! :3

  5. That’s always how the semester works for me, too. xP The first week is crazy and you feel so overwhelmed. But then you realize your work is spread out over a semester and you just need to take it one step at a time.

Congrats on the new job! How nice that it pays that much. ^^ To be honest, The Office makes me want to work in an office. So don’t worry. Though I feel like that TV show may glorify it a bit. =P I hope you continue to enjoy it.

Sucks about your professor, though. It’s like some of them go through a process while they get their PhD that slowly sucks the humanity out of them. Hopefully your professors next semester will be a bit more understanding and easy to work with.

Why are flats always the worst for blisters?! Ugh, I love them and hate them at the same time. I hope your ankle heals quickly.

  6. Congratulations on the Job! It will never be clear what you have to do at work at first, there are so many things you need to learn but you’re smart and you’ll get there! :) But it isn’t cool that you have to give up an hour for you classes Dx I mean, it’s nice to have some money.

How is your feet doing now? Have you found some new shoes that aren’t giving you so much pain?

  7. I’m glad work is going well, and that you have a nice supervisor! That’s too bad about your Theatre Appreciation professor though. I really doubt being 5 minutes late would make you fail, but I guess he doesn’t like people arriving late.

As for packing a sandwich, I recommend looking up other recipes you can easily make and bring! I’m getting back into the habit of bringing my lunch to work, so I’m trying to think of new things each week.

Ouch, that sucks about your ankle. I had flats that did the same and had to stop wearing them. It’s too bad because I really liked them too =/

  8. I think new places and things (work, school, etc.) take some time to get used to and actually know what to do… I’m glad it’s become more fun for you, though! :) And having an email at a workplace always makes it seem more official & as though you’re really a part of it (at least it does for me, anyway!).

I think I would enjoy making copies, shredding papers, scanning things, filing, etc. The errands part I don’t know if I would like. However, even if it’s at the bottom, it’s still a start to getting to the top! ;)

Your professor was a bit harsh. -.- And it’s not like he doesn’t get paid. He seems a lot like one of those teachers that take their position to the extreme, meaning they like to feel as though they have some kind of power and control over what their students do, even though it’s college. I don’t know if that makes any sense??

Also, your hourly pay is very nice! It’s so difficult to find that anywhere these days! For the lunch, if you like tuna, there are tuna lunch-to-go! packs with tuna, a mayo and a relish squeeze package, a spoon, a napkin, some crackers and a mint. It’s a twist on the sandwich-for-lunch-everyday, and it makes for something a little different. :) I always felt like I had a bit more energy after eating them for lunch when I was in high school. :D

I think that things, especially physical ones, hurt much more when we’re aware of them. It’s like being hungry: When you notice you’re hungry, it’s like you suddenly become much hungrier in such a short time span.

Good luck in finding some better shoes!

  9. Congrats on the job! It sounds really fun to work at the office, I don’t know for the major jobs in the office, I think it’s also stressful especially if the boss is a terror one.

Aw man, that sucks! Let me guess, are your shoes new? I usually experience that when I wear a new shoes. I hate it when that happens! I hope you find a new shoe, a shoe that won’t destory your feet! :D

  10. Congratulations on passing by the first week of the semester. Worry not, you will do good in all of your classes. Just work towards it. I’m sure you will figure something out with your work. Most importantly, you’re getting paid anyways. It’s good that you’re being productive and getting things done! Doesn’t it feel good to spend money that’s not yours? ;)

If you like working in an office-type environment, your major should do you well in the work force. I like working in an office too. Though I’m pretty sure the people working in the IT field is a mixture of both.

Despite of the fact that your professor wasn’t too easy on your work hours, at least you got it figured out. Some professors are really touchy in that kind of stuff, but then again, you are taking their class so you might as well follow their guidelines.

You make pretty good money for the job you have! You’re off to a pretty busy semester so far with work and school.

Eep! Having blood all over your shoes because of the blister sucks! Hopefully it’s not a big issue for you to clean after. x___x”!

    Take care :)

  11. I’m struggling with my current term right now as well. I absolutely positively suck at math, therefore this explains that I am not doing great in my finance class. I cannot wait till graduation day comes in 2014. I’m not going to continue and go onto a masters degree — its too much for me.

  12. I know how that is. I hate it when I have blisters on my feet. Hurts so much! I bet your shower afterwords stung really bad. That’s the worst part for me. The first shower after a cut or blister. It stings! After that it heals just fine so I am fine after that first shower but oh I hate that first shower. Lol

I’m moving out next semester as well! Going to an apartment. We could apartment shop together! You could show me apts and I could do the same. Then we could both get our perfect apts. :)
My mom is planning to pay rent for me (so I have 1 less thing to pay) so I can only do $550/mo max for rent which is really hard to do but I haven’t really looked in that price range much (as I didn’t know the price range until recently). She said it has to be the same price as a dorm. lkjdalkfsjdf So annoying but she is cosigning on my future car so I can do or say anything. :/ I can only get so much. At least she is helping at all.

$10.50/hr is good! If only you were able to work part time hours. Then you would be making a lot more. I make $11/hr and work full-time while going to school online so I know how that is. I need $$$ lol. :)
    ————–
Yeah, well, I quit. :/ I hate it but that is what I am doing. I’m trying to re-evaluate why I am doing this whole exercising since I stopped.

  13. Lol aww I hope you get used to your new job soon! Starting new things is always confusing. Dx I think the teacher does sound very dramatic, 5 minutes would probably have made no difference to your life. :S

That’s great that your pay is good! That makes it all worth while really. I had a weekend job at a Cafe a few months back, and no only was it just… bad… but the pay as well was terrible! Happy I don’t have to put up with it anymore. Dx
